Ultra-rightist Eduardo Verástegui officially registered with the National Electoral Institute (INE) on Thursday as an independent candidate for the Mexican presidency, marking another concerning development in the rise of far-right groups in Mexico’s political landscape; Verástegui, known for his ultra-conservative views and affiliation with the Viva México movement, which vehemently opposes abortion and challenges gender ideologies, now faces the task of gathering thousands of signatures to support his candidacy, ultimately competing against Claudia Sheinbaum of the Morena party and Xóchitl Gálvez of the Broad Front for Mexico; according to electoral regulations, the ultra-Catholic leader must secure the backing of 1% of the voter registry spread across 17 states within 120 days, all while framing his candidacy as the “will of God.”
“It’s a fact. It’s time. After a period of discernment, I have made the most important decision of my life: I have just registered with the INE my intention to be an independent candidate for the presidency of the Mexican Republic in the elections of June 2, 2024,” Verástegui posted on social media upon registering. “My fight is for life. My fight is for freedom. It’s time to remove the same old faces from power. Our country needs a new way of doing politics to eradicate corruption and impunity. We still have time! Let’s go all out for our Mexico!”
